Over the next few months, we want to help you get to know our exceptional team a bit better. We’re starting things off with our fearless leader, JLB Pilates owner & CEO Jen Bergren!
Jen, how and when did your Pilates journey start?
JB: My Pilates journey began over 20 years ago, when I watched my first Mari Winsor Pilates video. Then, I started taking classes at Life Time Fitness while I was working as a personal trainer. After a year of taking classes, I decided to begin my journey to become a certified Pilates instructor.
Tell us more about your certifications, Jen.
JB: I comprehensively trained through Peak Pilates. Then, I went on to complete my national certification through Pilates Method Alliance, which is now called National Pilates Certification Program. I have also completed years of continuing education and workshops, too.
What’s your favorite thing about Pilates?
JB: Everything! I’m always learning and growing. The physical and mental challenges are endless. It has honestly been one of the most humbling and difficult things I’ve ever done, both mentally and physically.
What’s your favorite apparatus or prop?
JB: It’s too hard to pick just one! Every apparatus has relevance and purpose. Some of the movements remind me of my time in gymnastics and dance, my other favorite activities! So, I guess any apparatus that helps me combine all of my sport interests, then that is my favorite!
When and how did you decide to start your own Pilates studio?
JB: I decided to leave my position as the Pilates Coordinator at Life Time Fitness and open my own studio over 6 years ago. I wanted to provide a studio experience that offered a different approach to how you work with clients. Our goal is to provide an educational, fun, client-focused environment where we can work with all different types of bodies and people.
What sets JLB Pilates apart from other Pilates studios?
JB: At JLB Pilates, we believe Pilates has the power to heal through movement. We specialize in working with people with injuries, trauma, and other complicated cases. Our class sizes are small, which allows for more instruction and guidance. We offer private and duet sessions too.
What do you like most about teaching at JLB Pilates?
JB: Our wonderful clients and staff. We are like a family. Many of our clients have been with us for a long time.
When you’re not at the studio, what do you like to do?
JB: I love to travel, exercise, play my violin, play games, watch movies, and hang out with my dog Watson, my family, and friends.
